What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health care discipline, which emphasises the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.

The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. In addition, chiropractors recognise the value and responsibility of working in cooperation with other health care providers when in the best interests of the patient.

Chiropractic is concerned with the preservation and restoration of health, and focuses particular attention on the misalignments of the functional and/or structural changes within the body that may influence mobility and general health of an individual.

What is McTimoney?

The McTimoney approach to chiropractic is based on a whole body assessment of the individual, concentrating not only on structural misalignments, but also on their general wellbeing and quality of life.

As the body works as a whole, it seems clear that it should be treated as a whole, and whilst it is certainly true that people usually seek relief from pain, the aim of a McTimoney chiropractor is to stimulate the body's own self-healing mechanism and facilitate a return to optimum health.

The way this is achieved is through a series of fast, low-force adjustments of not only the spine, but also, unusually for most chiropractors, the sacrum, pelvis, cranium and also the arms and legs. This series of light re-balancing adjustments are usually comfortable for the patient to receive, and mean that the approach is suitable for all age groups from the very young to the more mature patient.

Postural and daily living advice maybe given to help adjustments hold, and to ensure that people know how to change day to day life styles in order to help minimise recurrences of problems in the future.

What to expect from your first treatment.

You will be taken through a full case history regarding your general health background as well as details of your symptoms. This will help in assessing and analysing your particular problem. Then an examination of your joints and physical movement shall be carried out, this is usually done in your underwear or shorts if you feel happier as it is very important for the chiropractor to see your skin and any abnormalities that one may not normally notice. Further clinical assessment may then be carried out if necessary to determine that it is safe for you to be treated. All of which can take up to one and a half hours (including treatment unless a referral is needed).

If a problem is discovered or suspected, which requires medical investigation or an x-ray, then a referral to your GP maybe requested. Wherever possible your McTimoney chiropractor will work in co-operation with your GP and a letter is normally sent to your doctor informing them of your treatment.

How many sessions will you need?

The number of sessions needed varies considerably depending on:
Your age: you generally heal more slowly as you get older.
The nature of the problem: a simple backache will often clear more quickly than a sciatic problem.
How long you have had the problem: generally, yesterday's injury will resolve faster than one of 20 years' standing.

Most patients need between four and six sessions, however each individual varies depending on their co-operation and physical changes. No two people are the same and therefore everyone is treated to their own individual needs.
